What is a Chamber?
The Harbor City/Harbor Gateway Chamber of Commerce is a business and community associations, generally incorporated as a 501(c) (6) business. November 17, 1939 the chamber became incorporated.
Chambers of Commerce is not part of local, state, or federal government, though chambers do often partner with government to accomplish the chamber mission.
The Chambers is funded by membership dues as well as non-dues items such as events, sponsorships, contracts and grants.
The Chamber is govern by its Bylaws, and direction of its work, the control of its finances and property and the control and direction of its President/CEO is vested in a Board of Directors. The President/CEO oversees day-to-day operations and all Chamber staff.
Standing and special committees are established by and report to the Board of Directors and composed of members of the Chamber. Their purpose is to assist with chamber business and projects and stay within the mission statement. Committees make recommendations to the Board of Directors in regards to Chamber businesses and projects. The committees are chaired by at least one member of the Board of Directors. Non-members are encouraged to serve on committees at the discretion of the Committee chair.
